The trio’s depth and uniqueness comes from the three musicians’ ability to create themes and structures in real time with tempo changes, layered patterns and extensive research into their acoustic instruments, not to mention Chargui's enormous knowledge of musical modes from all over the East. Far from the usual approaches to sound and music, the trio's endless explorations lead them down fascinating paths, creating extraordinary listening experiences.

James Brandon Lewis trio

Born in 1983, saxophonist James Brandon Lewis is now considered one of the spearheads of new American jazz, an essential and bold heir to the sounds of masters like John Coltrane, Archie Shepp, Albert Ayler, Sonny Rollins and Ornette Coleman. He made his recording debut in 2014, and has since created a dozen albums. For the Firenze Jazz Festival, he will perform two different projects. The first is titled "The Dead Lecturers", performed alongside his friend Thomas Sayers Ellis, a gifted poet, intellectual, writer and photographer, with whom he performed with the collective called Heroes Are Gang Leaders for several years, a group that blends militant poetry with jazz, spoken poetry and hip hop. The second performance as part of the festival is a world premiere: JB Lewis's warm sax is accompanied by excellent Italian rhythm, with bass by Francesco Ponticelli and drums by Bernardo Guerra.

GIULIO OTTANELLI QUARTET withMICHELE TINO

The piano-less quartet is undoubtedly a formation that offers many possibilities in terms of composition and improvisation. With influences ranging from Bach, Lennie Tristano, Gerry Mulligan, Ornette Coleman, Jimmy Giuffre and Dave Duglas, the group explores the contrapuntal and expressive possibilities that can be created between two saxophones, when they are free from the "cage" of harmony. The repertoire ranges from original pieces to more traditional works that have been specially revisited for this lineup.

GUIDO ZORN (double bass)
